Is Frankfurt Main Train Station Area Safe For Tourists?
The area around Hauptbahnhof, Frankfurt Main Train Station (also known as Frankfurt HBF) is not pretty, and it’s certainly not a great first impression of Frankfurt but provided you keep your wits about you, it is safe.
Most major train stations around the world attract people with substance use disorders, vulnerable people and people with nowhere to go. Hauptbahnhof, Frankfurt’s Main Train Station, is no exception, and it is very obvious as soon as you step outside the station just how many people there are in dire situations who congregate outside.
The concourse is unaffected by these issues; however, it can be unnerving when you first arrive and step outside the station. But, the area around the central train station remains a hub for travellers, especially those catching early trains or travelling on a budget. Unless you are flashing your cash, most people won’t even notice you.

Safety Concerns Around Hauptbahnhof, Frankfurt’s Main Train Station
Safety is a common concern for travellers in any major city, and Frankfurt is no exception. While the area around the station can seem daunting at first, the presence of law enforcement, there’s a police station next to the train station on Poststraße 3, and the general flow of travellers throughout the day and night help maintain a level of security.
Take the same precautions you would use at home or anywhere else in the world. Be aware of your surroundings, and don’t flash your valuables.
As long as you stick to the main roads and busy areas, you shouldn’t have any issues walking around, even as a solo woman traveller.
Dining And Entertainment Around Frankfurt’s Main Train Station
When you move away from the actual station, the surrounding streets of the station are full of dining and entertainment options. From traditional German eateries to international cuisine, there’s something for everyone.
Most establishments cater to travellers and locals, providing a lively atmosphere showcasing Frankfurt’s diverse culture.
Booking.comChoosing Safe Accommodation Around Frankfurt’s Main Train Station
Do your research when choosing where to stay. I always use a combination of Booking.com and Google Maps. Booking.com is reliable because reviews can only be left by verified guests, ensuring they are authentic.
Check out my article, Why You Should Use Booking.com to discover all the reasons I trust and recommend this platform. From price match guarantees and free cancellation options to a user-friendly app and reliable customer service, find out why Booking.com stands out.
While Google Maps reviews are not regulated and anyone can post, they provide useful insights and precise locations of accommodation, helping you get a better overall picture.
If several people leave reviews saying the accommodation isn’t good, highlighting safety as a concern, give it a wide berth
The same goes for reviews about noise if you need a good night’s sleep. Given the number of bars and restaurants, some streets can get noisy.
Recommended Hotels Close To Hauptbahnhof, Frankfurt Main Station
I have stayed at and recommend The Metropolitan Hotel by Flemings, just across the street from the train and police station. If you need to stay close to Frankfurt’s main train station the location couldn’t be better. Take the station’s north exit, (Nordsaugang), and the hotel is just across the street.
While the Metropolitan Hotel by Flemings is not fancy, it does have a good reputation, and I felt completely safe while staying there.
Alternatively Flemings Hotel Frankfurt – Central belongs to the same company and is right next to the Metropolitan Hotel by Flemings.
Booking.comAttractions Around Frankfurt Main Train Station
There are plenty of attractions close to Frankfurt Main Station waiting for you to explore.
From relaxing river boat trips to informative guided walking tours and convenient Hop On Hop Off Bus rides, there’s something for every traveller to enjoy.
Exploring Römerberg from Hauptbahnhof
One and a half kilometres (one mile) away from Frankfurt Main Train Station lies the historic Römerberg, a picturesque main square adorned with charming timbered old town buildings set alongside the Main River.
It’s a flat, easy walk to Romberberg, but as you’ll be passing bars and restaurants along the way, you could easily get waylaid and find yourself eating and drinking close to the station, where the prices are much lower than around the Römer.
Alternatively take a ten minute Uber ride or use the cheap and reliable U-Bahn (Frankfurt’s subway) travelling two stops to Dom/Römer.
Cultural Highlights Around The Römer
Immerse yourself in history and culture at the Römer area, where you’ll discover the Frankfurt History Museum and the Museum of Modern Art. Don’t miss the breathtaking Frankfurt Cathedral (Kaiserdom St Bartholomäus), a real must visit in the city.
Weighing Frankfurt’s Main Station Convenience Versus A Scenic Stay
When planning your stay, consider your priorities. A hotel like The Metropolitan Hotel by Flemings is ideal if you value proximity to the station for an early departure.
Budget wise it is much cheaper to stay close to the station and the dining options are also less expensive than around the Römer.
However, if you prefer a more scenic and leisurely experience, staying in the Römer area offers a delightful contrast to the bustling environment around Hauptbahnhof.
While Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof and its immediate surroundings can be overwhelming, especially for first-time visitors, the overall benefits of its central location and public transport connectivity outweigh the initial discomfort.
With planning and awareness, you can confidently navigate this vibrant city and make the most of your stay in Frankfurt.
